Yesterday I discussed different types of fence panel you could use and trying to explain some of the differences between them. Having spoken about the main types of fence panel I now want to discuss a more unusual but completely valid option for your garden fencing.

The type of panel I’m going to talk about today is the cleft chestnut. This type of fencing is cheap and yet can still look really nice in the right garden. Created in a woven basket style, this design of fence panel is very upright and quite solid. They suit country gardens or rustic wildlife gardens extremely well, rather than matching a more formal garden with straight lines or designed curves.

You can buy this type of fencing in rolls from certain garden centres and DIY stores. When erected the woven parts are joined at each end and secured to straight oak laths with run up and down. The bottom section is then placed into the ground firmly.

Other benefits to cleft chestnut fencing are that each panel can be moved to different intervals and the fence can be altered to whatever design is necessary. With this in mind you can see that cleft chestnut fences can be used with versatility to make up your own bespoke design.

Hope you found this of use. Moving forward I’ll be looking further into the decisions to make when deciding what type of fencing you should use for your garden.

Cleft Chestnut Fencing

Today I’m going to talk about the different types of fence panel you can use when erecting a fence.  This might not seem the most exciting subject ever but if you are planning on installing new garden fencing it would help to know what type you want!  There are different factors to consider when choosing what type of fence you’d like.  Of course if you get a fence installed by a professional then they can discuss the options with you when they come round to quote.

There are four main types of fence panel and here I’m going to list them with a brief description of each one.

  • Closeboard Fencing

 Closeboard Fence Panels

A Closeboard fence is the strongest of the main four types.  The panels are made from overlapping boards of timber, hence the name.  This style of fencing affords complete privacy.

  • Palisade Fencing

 Palisade Fence

With palisade fencing you find a more traditional style of fence.  They are a type of picket fence and provide visibility while still maintaining security.

  • Overlap Fencing

 Overlap Fencing

This is a similar style to the closeboard fencing simply because they are also built from overlapping boards of timber.  The difference between the two types is that with overlap the boards cross horizontally instead of vertically as with the closeboard.  There is no visibility with overlap fencing so security and privacy are at a maximum.

  • Trellis Fencing

 Trellis Fencing

You will be most familiar with seeing trellis fencing above other panel types to add an attractive finish to the top of a fence.  Trellis is a pattern of wood with either diamond or square holes all the way through.  A trellis panel may provide security but as you can imagine not a great deal of privacy!  This can be in part solved by growing plants up the fence panels providing more privacy and a greener look to your fencing.

Ok so they are the main types of fence panel.  Hopefully you’ll have a better idea which you’d wish to use now.  In a future article I’ll be discussing other types of panels as well as other things to consider before choosing your perfect garden fence
